PROJECT

Welcome to the second annual Interscholastic Water Challenge! We challenge YOUR class to conserve more water than we can over a week-long period in the Spring of 2004!
Find out how important the issue of available fresh water is throughout the world.
Develop strategies based on what you learn and share with your classmates about how to waste less and save more of our most valuable natural resource.
Work as a team and challenge other classes in your school.
Compete to be named this year's water conservation champions!

PROCESS

STEP 1: Estimating Household and Personal Daily Water Use (Week of March 1, 2004)

a. Copy the "Personal Water Use" chart for each member of your household at [http://www.k12science.org/curriculum/drainproj/personalwaterusechart.html]
b. complete the form, based on home use throughout the week sited above;
c. next, calculate per capita use at
[http://www.k12science.org/curriculum/drainproj/householdwaterusechart.html]

STEP 2: Estimating Class "Water Use Quotient"

Collect results from all students and divide the total daily gallons used by the number of students in your class.

STEP 3: Taking the Challenge! (Week of April 19,2004)

a. After discovering and discussing ways to conserve water, practice more efficient ways to use water at home;
b. repeat steps 1 and 2 above;
c. calculate the difference between the average water use of March and April--this is your class score!

STEP 4: Submitting Your Results & Naming a Winner (Week of April 26, 2004)

a. Enter the above results at
[http://www.k12science.org/curriculum/drainproj/data/drainprojform.asp]
b. compare the results and see which class wins the challenge!

SPONSOR & PRIZE

Thanks to a generous gift of $2000 from Kennametal Inc., the teams in this year's challenge have something incredible to work for: providing the gift of fresh water to those who need it most!

100% of this year's prize money will go towards the construction of a fully-functioning well that will provide water for an entire village.

The winning team will have the honor of making that donation on behalf of its members and the school they represent!

For more about this year's recipient, visit the web site for the Albert Schweitzer Hospital in the Artibonite region of Haiti.
